Jazzy's Skulduggery Pleasant Q&A with a 'Tween
It’s no secret that Derek Landy’s Skulduggery Pleasant was one of my favourite book series
in my ‘tween years. I blogged about it HERE and still go back and read it from time-to-time. I have been begging my ten-year-old brother, Taj to give it a go for ages and at long last he too has become a Skulduggery
Pleasant convert. With the MS Readathon on the horizon and kids looking for something fresh to sink their teeth into,
I have quizzed Taj on why he has become such a big fan…
What do you think of the Skulduggery Pleasant series?
Skulduggery Pleasant is an awesome book series because there is always something happening or there's just a really funny bit. It has a lot of twists, great characters and bad guys.
At first my sister always wanted me to read this book series, but to be completely honest I said it looked dumb. Then I finally gave in and I just couldn't stop reading Skulduggery Pleasant after I started because it's so good.
Which book are you up to?
I am reading book number six. It is called Death Bringer. This is definitely the best one so far! It's even more action-packed and funnier.
Who’s your favourite character and why?
My favourite character is Tanith Low because she is pretty epic and super powerful. Tanith is an adept meaning that in this case she can walk on walls.
Who’s your favourite villain and why?
This is a very difficult question because of the spoilers that happen later in the series, but without these it would be Baron Vengeance - he is just so evil!
If you could choose a special power from these books, which would it be?
It would be teleportation because I would be able to move wherever I want, whenever I want. This would really come in handy so I could get home sooner after school and go on more holidays.
What were you reading before Skulduggery Pleasant?
I really like funny books. I'm a huge fan of David Walliams. Last year in the MS Readathon, I read the Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.
How has Skulduggery Pleasant helped your reading?
I think I have become more confident; I now know I can read books with no pictures. There are long words and cliff-hangers at the end of each book, which make me want to go on to the next one.
Skulduggery Pleasant can be gruesome. Should parents be worried?
Yes, parents should be a little worried about this book because people explode and die in horrible ways. The characters who are killed are usually zombies so their deaths are not so gory. The violence in this series is mainly magical meaning that it is not as realistic.
What age do you recommend this series to?
I think that Skulduggery Pleasant is a great series for 'tweens. I recommend these books to people aged 9+ because there is no nudity, only a little bit of language and minor violence*
What do you think you will read next when you finish the entire Skulduggery Pleasant series?
I'm hoping I will be allowed Demon Road by Derek Landy, who is the same author of Skulduggery Pleasant.
You have been doing the MS Readathon since you were in Kindy. Are you going to join me again this year in reading for a reason?
Yes, I am because of the families suffering with MS. I always have liked helping people, but it is a bonus getting to read in order to do so.
The Australian MS Readathon is held throughout the month of August. Please join me in reading for a reason and sign up at: msreadathon.com.au
If you would like to sponsor my tenth MS Readathon, you can access my fundraising page HERE.
*A NOTE TO PARENTS
This series goes up a notch from Book No.7 Skulduggery Pleasant: Kingdom of the Wicked where there is a marked increase in heartless violence and the introduction of minor swear words.
